Bamako, the capital city of Mali hosted from\nDecember 19 to 21, 2022, the training of trainers\u2019 workshop on mentoring.\nOrganized by the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) of the University\nof Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB), and Johns Hopkins\nUniversity (USA), this scientific\nactivity is part of the ” Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Training\nProgram (Mali-Guinea-EID-RTP\/ Grant D43), funded by the National Institutes of\nHealth of the United States of America (NIH\/NIAID).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All scientific works need professional and\nadministrative support for a better organization of activities, said Prof.\nSeydou DOUMBIA, the Program PI\/Mali. \u201cDear mentees, this mentoring exercise is\nparticularly intended for you, because it helps you to better formulate your\nobjectives and structure your capacities for achievement. Thus, you can succeed\nin your careers. I urge you to be in control of your choices, and to assume\nthose choices. It is not just about being a teacher, but having the knowledge\nto be able to better transfer your skills.<\/em>\u201d, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n About sixty participants, made up of senior\nand junior researchers, were brought together to strengthen the capacities of\ndiagnosis, monitoring and career development of young researchers in a\ndecentralized manner. \u201cThis workshop\nallowed us to take stock of the current unfolding of the roles of mentors and\nmentees. It allowed us to identify our strengths and weaknesses, and what will\nallow us to improve our ways of doing things in the future. I was impressed by\neveryone’s active participation. Thus, a mentorship based on respect and mutual understanding is essential for personal and professional development. According to the mentor, Prof Yacouba SISSOKO from Mali, before, mentoring was perceived as an activity of moods, without taking into account the required standards that we were unaware of. \u201cThis workshop comes at the right time because it helps us to put our research activities in order. Beyond the theory, the practices carried out will be very useful in our daily activities\u201d, he testified. For the mentee Maladho DIABY-from Guinea, may this activity continue for better coordination of research activities in the universities of our two countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n At a time of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, health emergencies are forcing scientific researchers from all sides, to pool efforts to face the common enemy that threatens the survival of all of humanity. \u201cThis mentoring exercise is so important that we are going to integrate it into the doctoral program at our University. In addition, such sessions will be organized for teachers and students, in each institution of the USTTB. We also intend to pool our efforts to strengthen this dynamic of integration with the Republic of Guinea, in order to raise the level of training and research.
