From March 11th to 12th, the Center organized\nits 1st Symposium on &#8220;Developing Bioinformatics Expertise for Sustainable\nBiomedical Research in Africa&#8221;. What is this new science in which our\ncountry is pioneering in Africa. Interview with Professor Mamadou WELE &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How important can\nthis science be in the development of a country like Mali?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prof. Mamadou WELE<\/strong>: In a tropical country such as\nMali, where endemic diseases such as HIV \/ AIDS, bilharziasis, for which there\nare no medicines yet, it is important to use this science to understand the\nbiology of parasites, the development of diseases and to look for drugs to\nattack these diseases. Computer biological research (bioinformatics) is faster\nand less expensive and applies to all biological sciences. That is, it serves\nnot only human health, but also, agronomists as part of the genetic improvement\nof plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The African Center\nof Excellence in Bioinformatics has just organized its first Symposium. What is\nyour assessment of this scientific event?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prof. Mamadou WELE<\/strong>: The results of the first\nsymposium are satisfactory. For two days, we received participants from the US\nNational Institutes of Health (NIH); from Tulane University of the United\nStates USA; Pasteur Institute of Tunis and France. It was a space for students\nto present their work. One of the advantages of this symposium, in addition to\nthe workshop that followed, was this mixture of biologists, pharmacists,\nmathematicians, physicists and computer scientists to try to solve the problems\nof biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is bioinformatics\nthe future of scientific research in the world?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prof. Mamadou WELE<\/strong>: About ten years ago, it was\nthought that the horizon was science such as genomics or proteomics, after we\nentered other sciences including metabolomics. It&#8217;s really a science of the\nfuture that opens the horizon to other sciences. If we take the case of\nmedicine today, we see that we are moving from general medicine to specialized\nmedicine. It is a medicine that according to the genes of each patient will\nknow which drug to prescribe.
