USTTB: Over 2,000 patients benefited from a campaign offering free eye consultations and surgery

The University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) located at Point G was crowded during the free eye consultation and surgery campaign, which took place from November 17th to 20th, 2025. Organized by the University of Sciences, Techniques, and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB), in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy and the Mali Wellness Foundation, this initiative, considered a gesture of accountability to the communities, benefited 2,270 patients, including about 100 surgical interventions.

From dawn to dusk, communities were mobilized. Their motivation stemmed not only from a desire to improve their eyesight, but also from the quality of the care provided by the team of 14 specialists from the United States, supported by others from Mali. The aim of this campaign was to provide assistance to people in need who do not have the means to afford it.

The final phase of this campaign was marked by a visit from Rachna KORHONEN, the US Ambassador to Mali. She was assisted by the Rector of the University of Sciences, Techniques, and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB), Prof. Mahamadou DIAKITE, the Director of the Point G University Hospital Center, Prof. Soumaila KEITA, and the Director of the African Institute of Tropical Ophthalmology (CHU-IOTA), Col. Adama Issaka GUINDO.

In front of these personalities, the Executive Director of the Mali Wellness Foundation, Michael Clayton, expressed his pride in the success of this humanitarian campaign, which brought smiles to the faces of many patients in need.

Some patients underwent surgery, while others received medication and glasses. This charitable work, which we have been carrying out in Mali for over 15 years, will continue..“,said Mister Clayton.

The age group targeted by this free eye consultation and surgery campaign was 1 to 90 years old, from Bamako and elsewhere. MORE PICTURES HERE
