The UCRC is establishing itself as a leader in genomics in Africa

Thanks to its cutting-edge infrastructure and world-class platforms, the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) is revolutionizing medical research. The center features top-tier sequencing equipment, notably the Illumina NextSeq sequencer and the Applied Biosystems 3500 Genetic Analyzer. VIDEO

Installed within the molecular biology and genomics laboratory, the Illumina NextSeq system sets the UCRC apart. It is, in fact, the first certified center in Africa to deploy the innovative VirCapSeq technique. “The VirCapSeq technique is a method that makes it possible to identify more than 200 viral families within a single sample, meaning, to read their genetic code,” explains Dr. Fousseyni Kané, researcher-biostatistician/bioinformatician at the UCRC.

These disruptive technologies allow for the decryption of detailed genetic information. They thus offer the capability to make precision medical diagnoses and rapidly identify new virus variants.
